Greet the class as usual and check the homework.
Step Ⅱ
Introduction and new words learning:
A. Today we will learn to talk about people who are great. They have done something unusual and make us admire them. Some are champion or sports stars, some are musicians, some are very exceptional, that is, not like common people. Here we have some words we will use to talk about these people.
Show the words on the screen. Point to them and lead the students to learn them. Explain the meaning or usages of them if necessary.

B. Section A
Evoke or elicit the students by explaining the meaning of the word exceptional. Say, Please read the language goal. The language goal of this unit is to talk about exceptional people. What do you think exceptional means?
(Wait a few minutes to let the students think about it.) Then explain that exceptional means a person is outstanding in some way.
Next, write the word born on the board. Say, we are going to talk about when some students were born. Let's find out when some of you were born.
T: When is your birthday?
S1: April 11.
T: What year were you born?
S1: 19-
Repeat the activity with other students.
Write the words how long … on the board.
T: Another thing we will talk about is how long each student did something for. Can you ask some questions using the words how long …?
S2: How long does it take to walk to school?
T: That's correct. How long does it take to walk to school? What's the answer to that question? How long does it take you to walk to school?
S2 :Twenty minutes.
Have students ask and answer other how long questions. Then ask some how long questions about students' lives such as How long did you study last night? and How long did it take you to get to school today?

Make a list of international sports stars you know.
(This activity introduces students to the concept of exceptional people.)
Ask students to look at the picture on the book. Let them guess what the people are doing in the pictures by direction of the International Sports Stars of Fame on the exhibition hall.
Brainstorm: Ask students, would you please think of some famous sports stars, or athletes, and write their names under the table International Sports Stars on the textbook?

Ask students who they wrote down, and see if there are any common answers.

Listen and write the year the sports star was born under each photo.
(This activity gives students practice in understanding the target language in spoken conversation.)
Just now we talk about when is your birthday? and what year were you born? Now let's talk about the sports stars birthday and the year of born. Please look at the photos.
Point out the chart. Then point to the word Born: and the fill-in space under each picture. Say, we are going to hear four short conversations about the year the sports star was born Listen carefully and write the date each person was born under each photo. Point out the sample answer.
Play the recording the first time. Students only listen.
Play the recording a second time. This time ask students to write in the dates.
Check the answers.

Pairwork: practice the conversation about Deng Yaping above. Then make conversations about the other sports stars.
(This activity provides guided oral practice using the target language.)
Point out the conversation in the picture in Activity 1b. Ask two students to read the example to the class:
Say, Now work with a partner. Make your own conversations about the people in the picture.
Then have students work in pairs. As they talk, move around the room monitoring their work. Offer language and pronunciation support as needed.
Ask several pairs to say their conversations to the class.

Today we have talked about the year the sports stars were born . And we learned to know something about them. They are exceptional people. Rome was not built in one day. They have spent years of hard work to achieve that. So work hard from now on. May some day you will always be asked when were you born? And your birthday will be known to everybody.
